Mind if I share my own journey of how I ditched my social media?

It started with the will to ditch it, but only will doesn't get our accustomed monkey brain to act. Knowing stuff is not the same as acting upon it. So I started with awareness. Creating awareness for myself of how much I used to use social media. I did this by:

1. Checking my screen time and arriving at the conclusion that 5 hours a week on Instagram is just too much really (my parents spend 9+ h/w on Facebook, and some friends of mine spend 14+ h/w on social platforms... :X);

2. Swapping app location on my screen – It was almost a mechanical pre-programmed behavior. Get phone. Unlock phone. Tap icon. Scroll mindlessly till eternity. When I swapped the usual position of my insta app icon with the Headspace app, I found myself opening Headspace more than 10 times per day. That created awareness of how much I use social media because I'm just used to use social media, not per se because I want to;

3. With Headspace frequently open, I started to meditate more. Those few minutes per day I opened mindless apps, were now spend into being more present and aware;

4. Within a month of meditating a bunch of minutes per day, social media stopped making any sense, I didn't have any desire to use it. Before I knew it, I stopped drinking alcohol, stopped smoking and stopped eating anything unhealthy that my body doesn't really need.

It's funny how much can change with a little bit of awareness. Patterns and addictions are not that difficult to break, turns out. Start with being aware instead of big life-changing first step that might not hold till tomorrow.

So thanks for this article, I do believe that curating your usage more is also a very good first step into letting go.
